Addressing Apostasy in the Church
When is enough enough? Let's be specific: When do we stop turning a deaf ear and a blind eye to apostasy in God's Church? The church is the bride of Christ, as stated in the fifth chapter of Ephesians: "Husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her, that he might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that he might present her to himself a glorious church, not having a spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish."
On the opposite end of the spectrum is the great Whore of Babylon, described in Revelation 17, who "sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornications." This represents false religion and apostasy in the Church. Apostasy occurs when the pure, clean bride of Christ starts to become more like the Whore of Babylon, even if by small, incremental steps.
The Historical Context of Apostasy
In the Christian world, there are two main subsets: Catholics and Protestants. The name "Protestant" emerged from the Great Reformation, a direct response to 1260 years of Roman Catholic rule and oppression. This time period is commonly referred to as the Dark Ages. The term "Dark Ages" more accurately describes a protracted period when the Holy Scriptures were tragically unavailable to the common man due to their suppression by the Roman Catholic Church.
During the Reformation, brave men of God began to translate and redistribute His written Word. The primary Protestant denominations were established in the 17th and 18th centuries, during which time the totalitarian power of the Roman Catholic Church was beginning to wane as it received a "deadly wound" in 1798 with the removal of the Pope from power by the French General Berthier.
The Rise and Fall of Religious Power
It is now 2024, and that deadly wound has long since been healed. Exactly as foretold in Bible prophecy, the Roman Catholic Church has climbed out of the ashes of near obliteration to become once again the predominant Judeo-Christian religion, as well as to establish itself as a civil and political world power. For some time now, the various Protestant churches have been protesting much less and conforming much more.
The vast majority of these, for instance, have willingly accepted the false Sabbath, which the Papal religion claims to have changed, not only without a single shred of biblical authority but also as compelling evidence of her own declared authority. The growing ecumenical movement, coupled with the launching of the contemporary Christian movement, has turbocharged the growth of a new, more widely accepted form of Christianity.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church and New Christianity
The Seventh-day Adventist Church has been swept into this wave of new Christianity. When it comes to God's truth, there are no shades of gray. The true Church, which is the bride of Christ, and the false church, which is the Whore of Babylon, are completely polar opposites. One is all about truth—God's truth. The other is all about lies and deceptions—Satan's lies and deceptions.
The problem is, apostasy can be amazingly subtle and happens gradually over time. A lot of poison will kill you quickly, but a little bit of poison will still kill you, just more slowly.
For instance, no Seventh-day Adventist should be okay with worshiping on Sunday instead of the Biblical seventh day Sabbath. Likewise, we would not be okay with confessing our sins to a human priest instead of saying prayers of confession to our heavenly Father through Jesus Christ our heavenly high priest.
But what about the doctrine of the Trinity? How can we continue to defend a doctrine that was not supported by the founding pioneers of our church, clearly has its roots in pagan idolatry, and according to the Roman Catholic Church, "The mystery of the Trinity is the central doctrine of the Catholic faith, upon it are based all the other teachings of the Church." (Handbook for Today's Catholic p. 11)
The Last Warning: "Enough is Enough"
In a world where religious unity and ecumenical movements are gaining momentum, the call for discernment and adherence to biblical truths becomes more critical than ever. As believers, it is imperative to remain vigilant and grounded in the teachings of the Bible, avoiding the subtle allure of apostasy that can lead the Church astray.
The time has come for the Church to reaffirm its commitment to the truth and to ensure that the bride of Christ remains pure and unblemished, ready for the glorious return of Jesus Christ. As the world moves forward, let us be steadfast in our faith and unwavering in our dedication to God's Word.
The warning of Revelation 18 to, "Come out of her my people," is the very last warning that God will give the inhabitants of this world. This warning directly precedes the closing of probation, God's final judgments, and the second coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This final warning is God's way of telling this world that, "Enough is Enough."
